Head Butler -- Books: The Spies of Warsaw
Posting : Jesse Kornbluth : 07/18/2008

The "spy" is "an ordinary-looking man, who led a rather ordinary life" -- he's a mid-level engineer at a German ironworks, married, with three children. But as he takes the train to Warsaw in the autumn of 1937, his leather satchel contains some engineering diagrams. Once in Warsaw, he'll give them to his contact.

Iraq's Doors Are Open
Posting : Travel : 07/07/2008

The "surge" may come to mind first, but there is more happening in Iraq than sectarian violence. Adventure-seekers finally have easy access to the war-torn country. Civilian flights routinely arrive at Baghdad International Airport, and hotels offer accommodations. If the ruins of Babylon or the waters of the Euphrates were on your list, you now have the chance to make the journey. Obviously, though, caution is advised.

Chicago: R&R Escapes
Posting : Travel : 06/02/2008

Chicago is one of those cities that's steeped in history. It's old school. But despite the odds against it (most notably, it's in a flyover state), Chicago still remains on the leading edge of style, and culture. So when you're in Chi-town, you be sure to take one evening for the classic, and one for the new.

Off-Off-Balance Sheet
Article : April 2008
With certain banks covetous of (read: being forced to find) new ways to offload debt from their balance sheets, Long or Short Capital (increasingly our favorite Web site for coverage on these ticklish matters) notes the wary banker should keep in mind how off-balance sheet maneuvers are now being subjected to a growing – nay, near-abusive – amount of scrutiny, whether they come in the form of SIVs, super-SIVs, or ultra-megawide–thisonewillwork-SIVs. We don’t need to go over this again, right? But under the carpet is where everyone’s already stuffed trillions of derivatives exposure. So, that’s out. What to do? Allow us to introduce the outsourced off-balance sheet.

Deal-A-Meal: Star Treatment
Article : April 2008
In Los Angeles, they say you’re only as good as your last picture (Coppola didn’t work for two years after Godfather 3) and the same goes for the city’s restaurants. Fortunately, the valleys surrounding L.A. yield one of the longest and most bountiful harvests in the world – and the wine is pretty good, too.

Fired? Maybe It’s Time To Let That In-House Designer Go…
Article : March 2008
And you really don’t need a gardener when you live in Manhattan, do you? For the one shrub? Really, it’s not that serious. Obviously, you can’t fire the butler – who answers their own front door anymore? And, while it will hurt, the damask valences and Swarovski planters will have to wait. An insider’s look at how New York’s various champagne dealers and personal wotsis have been utterly orphaned by Wall Street’s outbreak of pink slips. Both a cautionary tale and (we must admit) good read.

It’s Not Easy Being A Buyout All-Star
Article : March 2008
Anymore, anyway. As rapid-fire filings these days clearly show, life has certainly changed for the private-equity industry, where easy credit, a steady economy and willing sellers created a buying bonanza in the none-too-distant past. And no firm was more voracious than this one – a company that purchased, on average, a business every 11 days for the past three years. An inside look at how its world has turned upside-down.

Global Default Rate To Quintuple In ‘08
Article : January 2008
Zounds. Moody’s says past results are no measure of future performance (thanks a mil for that, Moody’s). Or, more specifically, just because the global default rate on high- yield, high-risk bonds closed 2007 at a 26-year low is no reason for hope in the new year.

This Week in Wall Street History: November 19-25
Posting : This Week In Wall Street History : 11/19/2007

It was during the middle (EST) of the trading day in 1963 and investors had just heard the news that President John F. Kennedy had been shot while riding in a motorcade in Dallas.
