Only a year and a half after both Delta and Northwest emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, the pair agreed to the biggest airline merger of all time. The companies, once again reeling from sky-high fuel costs, see efficiencies in a combination.

But airline mergers have never been easy -- witness the dissolution of talks between United and Continental, and United and US Airways, earlier this year -- with unions, politicians and frustrated fliers all striving to make their voices (often loudly) heard.
