Don’t Forget Your Euros

Shops in New York City have been accepting euros for some time now, capitalizing on the currency’s strength and Europeans’ lack of desire to get ripped off at the Trump Tower or the airport while converting. Now, you can take those euros to the Hamptons with you.

At the Shoe-Inn, a tony Westhampton Beach store that specializes in European shoes, a paper sign in the window speaks volumes about a recent retail change on the East End: "We now accept euros."

The rising value of the euro, the currency of European Union nations, and the falling dollar have made the U.S. a bargain for Europeans, who are traveling here in increasing numbers.

Local merchants have responded to the influx by accepting euros, something unheard of locally until the past year. Manhattan stores with global operations, like Tiffany & Co., have long accepted foreign currency, said Irwin Kellner, an economics scholar at Dowling College and chief economist for MarketWatch.com. But for the Island, even the Hamptons, accepting the currency represents a retail sea change.
