Penthouse: Family Treasures How takeover tycoon Ira Rennert acquires trophy properties for his “spin-offs." April 2008On Wall Street, Ira Rennert is best known as the billionaire corporate-takeover specialist who has made more than a few waves with his heavy-handed business tactics and high-flying lifestyle. (In addition to building a lawsuit-provoking 63-acre, 29-bedroom oceanfront Hamptons estate, the Manhattan resident is frequently castigated as one of the world’s worst polluters, thanks to the environmentally unfriendly actions of the mining and metals companies owned by his Renco Group.) But on Park Avenue, Rennert is surely better known for being a generous and doting father. This winter, Rennert — who made a handsome profit flipping Hummer maker AM General to Ron Perelman’s MacAndrews & Forbes four years ago — reportedly dropped more than $60 million in cash to buy apartments at two of Park Avenue’s poshest addresses for his daughters and their husbands. For his eldest child, Tamara (and her husband, Randall Winn, a managing director at financial-data provider Capital IQ), Rennert plunked down $32 million for a fourth- and fifth-floor duplex at the legendary 740 Park. Formerly owned by Mosler Safe heiress Janet Coleman, who passed away last May, the apartment features four bedrooms, a library, a spacious living room and dining room and a kitchen with a separate breakfast room and pantry.
