My Three-Hour Vacation : Milan at Midday

Amazing what you can do while the city eats and sleeps...

In winter, the concrete landscape of Milan can be a bit dreary, so I often escape to the beauty of its interior and partake of the things the Milanese do best: food and fashion. Dealmaking with the Italians can be a drawn-out process of government red tape and lengthy time to “get to know” a potential takeover target. I took this recent midday breather from tense negotiations and found treasures that, as my counterparts might say, refreshed the soul.

11:40 a.m. Break from negotiations. I always stay at the Four Seasons Hotel Milano, in the Centro section. With luscious décor and impeccable service, its Il Foyer lounge is perfect for a meeting.

11:44 a.m. Hire a driver versed in the city’s roundabouts and one-way streets. Take Via Pontaccio for a five-minute view of the eastern side of the Duomo, the world’s second-largest Gothic church.

11:55 a.m.–12:20 p.m. You’ve no time to hear Così Fan Tutte, but only €5 will get you through the museum entrance just before the (noon) lunchtime closing at legendary opera house La Scala. While drinking in the glittering gold-and-marble interior, scope out good seats to catch Tristan und Isolde on your next trip.

12:29–1:25 p.m. Treat yourself to the city’s tastiest power lunch at Da Giacomo. It’s closed Mondays, so reservations are recommended to secure a table for a chance to see designer (and noted regular) Valentino and order the famous fish and made-daily pizza bread.

1:30–2 p.m. Just barely enough time for a fitting at men’s-suit designer Caraceni. Even with a bit of a rush through the pants, you’ll still have a $20,000 suit that increases in value and that you can bequeath to an heir, as Fiat’s Gianni Agnelli did to his grandson.

2:05–2:15 p.m. A quick stop at G. Lorenzi, the world’s greatest supplier of luxury men’s-grooming products. Head to the second floor for a fascinating collection of historic shaving implements, including a bronze Etruscan razor from circa 1000–600 b.c.

2:16–2:34 p.m. Get back in the car. Dash to Maglia Franceso for Italy’s best handmade umbrella. Then cruise past Parco Sempione, a popular kiss-and-ciao spot for couples ending their siestas.

2:35 p.m. Return to the Four Seasons for round two of negotiations, with a half-hour left to prepare before your Milano counterpart reemerges from his own siesta.
