Part I of III: Walk in the Shoes of the Next Light Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World
Will “For Real” Williams is an up and coming Light Heavyweight boxer who’s fought his way up from nothing – He's on his way to #1 – You're not going to want to miss this story. SPECIAL NOTE: See Willie Williams fighting in the Main Event on Saturday, June 21, 2008 in New Jersey Time 7:00 PM – Doors open at 6:00 PM Information/tickets: 856.392.3087 609.247.3867 Location: Campbell Fitness Center 118 Walnut Street Salem, New Jersey 08079 It’s a windy spring day in Baltimore, Maryland when I noticed a fiercely-determined looking young black man standing outside of my office, seemingly impenetrable to the wind. At 6’ 1”, with shaved head, he displays a lean, quiet strength that you know - right off the bat - not to mess with. Holding out his hand, two gold teeth sparkled from either side of his sharp jaw. I flinched as a backfiring car passed; "For Real" did not. Meet Willie "For Real" Williams, Professional Light Heavyweight Boxer from Baltimore, Maryland. Presently ranked #30 in the nation, by this time next year, he could be in the top 10. By his own estimate, #1 – in the world - by 2009. Tough as nails, the drive of a dozen semis and with the heart of ten champions together, I believe him. This is the real story of a professional boxer climbing the way to the top... Born July 27, 1978 in Baltimore, Maryland, Willie "For Real" Williams is the "real deal." Williams fought his way through the streets, surviving an entire childhood of drug dealers, crime, violence, poverty, the murder of his brother and even served "three years and change" in prison...on a charge artificially manufactured by police. Now though, For Real is on the right path (not that he wasn't ever though), with a beautiful wife, daughter and incredible community supporting his dream to become the Light Weight Champion of the World. If the streets of Baltimore City (which incidentally has the highest per-capita murder rate in the nation for black males) make a man hard, than it's no wonder Willie Williams has moved as quickly through the ranks of professional boxing as he has... Currently ranked 30 in the country with an upcoming fight Saturday night in New Jersey against Light Heavyweight, Will says, "Saturday's fight and all of my efforts right now, are to prepare for an upcoming title fight in August, the Intercontinental Title – If I win that fight I will be in the top 20 in both the World Boxing Council (WBC) and the International Boxing Federation (IBF)." Willie pauses for a moment and holds his fist out to the horizon, before turning back to me, "That's the tuning point, that's when I'm on my way potentially having the opportunity to start working my way to number one..." Again, he sets his sights on his extended fist, "I will be the next Light Heavyweight Champion of the world. My fight name "For Real" came from a friend of mine, who called me one day and said, 'Hey For real...' I said, 'What did you call me?' He replied, 'Remember yesterday when you asked me about your fight name... I think it should be For Real, because you're the only person in this world... Everything you say, you do.' That's where my fight name came from, and I'm telling you now, I will be the next Light Heavyweight Champion of the world." While the above transaction might sound like Willie is overly optimistic... His voice is polite, soft-spoken and filled with confidence. Willie is a Champion and not only do I believe he will win the fight this Saturday, but the title in August and take #1 – in the world – by the end of 2009... In Part II next week, you're going to hear the post-fight interview from Saturday, and then, in Part III, Willie tells his amazing story of fighting his way up from the streets in Baltimore, surviving the drug culture, his brother's murder, his time in prison, his family story and how he finally found his passion, proving that nothing is impossible in this world... If you believe in yourself. This is the real life story of one man - beating all odds... Mark Whistler 6/20/08
